OISTER Project

What is the OISTER

The Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research (OISTER) project consists of nine Japanese universities (Hokkaido Univ., Saitama Univ., the Univ. of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Nagoya Univ., Kyoto Univ., Univ. of Hyogo, Hiroshima Univ., Kagoshima Univ) and the NAOJ/NINS. The OISTER project is designed to promote research using multi-mode continuous observations in the optical / near-infrared wavelengths from utilizing the university-owned small- and medium-sized telescope network. Our primary scientific objectives are the observational studies in optical and near-infrared regime for the optical counterparts of the gravitational-wave and/or neutrino sources,  as well as various other transient and astrophysical objects.

Goals of the OISTER project

  • exploring multi-messenger astronomy research and education
  • developing advanced research fields through agile and continuous observations that are difficult with large telescopes alone
  • promoting time-domain astronomy through focused Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations
  • improving the research capabilities of the university through fostering young researchers.
